About BDC

The Botswana Development Corporation (hereinafter referred to as “BDC” or the “Corporation”) is the Government’s main investment arm established in 1970 as a private company and wholly owned by the Government of Botswana through the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).

BDC is the country’s main agency for commercial and industrial development.Established in 1970 under the Companies Act,

BDC is a company Limited by Shares and owned by the Government of Botswana.

The control of the Corporation is vested in an independent Board of Directors led by an Independent Non-Executive Chairman. The Managing Director is responsible for the day to day running of the Corporation.

Our Mandate

BDC’s primary mandate is to provide and facilitate funding of commercially viable projects and/or enterprises that contribute towards industrialisation, economic development, and diversification. The Corporation provides debt, equity, and mezzanine funding both domestically, regionally, and internationally. Other than primary diamond mining and what many consider to be ‘sin stocks’ (e.g. tobacco, gambling), BDC makes sure to invest in viable projects across impactful sectors of the economy, with a particular focus on those aligned to national priorities.

BDC provides both debt and equity financing to commercially viable projects that perform one or more of the following functions:

Pioneer new industries
Unlock value in existing industries
Drive diversification and exports
Create significant employment.
Stimulate private sector growth and foster linkages with the local industry

Our Governance Structure

At a governance level, BDC is directed by a board of directors appointed by the Minister of Trade and Industry (as the representative of the shareholder). In appointing the members, the Minister places emphasis on skills and expertise and attracts private business leaders, public sector executives as well renowned practitioners in areas of specialities deemed critical for BDC’s strategy.
